Features of the Kohl’s Credit Card

August 31st, 2011

Clients can apply for one type of credit card offered by Kohl’s. This is the Kohl’s Charge and it is presented with an annual percentage rate for purchases 21.90%. This rate is a sum of the prime rate, found in the pages of The Wall Street Journal on the last business day of the previous calendar quarter, and a fixed margin or spread chosen by Kohl’s. For the purchase annual percentage rate, this margin is 18.65%. This means that any changes in the prime rate will result in changes of the annual percentage rate, this change will be imposed for billing cycles following the quarter in which the change occurs. If the cardholder fails to submit at least their total minimum payment until the due date each billing period or the payment instrument has not been processed and has been returned unpaid a penalty annual percentage rate will be applicable to all outstanding balances. This penalty percentage rate is 24.90% or the sum of the prime rate and a fixed margin of 21.65%. The penalty rate will be in effect indefinitely unless the cardholder pays at least the total minimum payments each billing periods for six consecutive months following the violation. Kohl’s will inform the card member for his/her breach and the increase of the annual percentage rate before the increase is imposed.

This credit card is offered with no annual membership fee and a minimum interest charge of $1.  A neat way to avoid imposed interest on any purchases made through this card is to pay the whole outstanding balance within 25 days of getting the billing statement. This period is called grace period and shows that no interest will be charged on purchases if the balance has been paid in full on time for the previous billing cycle.

How is the Kohl’s Credit Card Payments calculated?

August 31st, 2011

Kohl’s credit card payments are calculated using the method “Average Daily Balance, including new purchases”. This method includes calculation the daily balance for each day of the billing cycle. This is done, using the following formula: Daily Balance = Balance at the beginning of the day + new purchases + unpaid interest charge + any fees charged + other charges – payments and/or credits. When each daily balance is worked out, the average daily balance is the sum of all the daily balances and divided to the number of the days in the billing cycle, usually the days are 30. The amount the cardholder owes to Kohl’s is calculated when the average daily balance is multiplied by the monthly periodic rate. This periodic rate is 1/12 of the annual percentage rate.

Another step in calculating the Kohl’s Credit Card Payment is defining the total minimum payment, which is mandatory every month. If the cardholder’s balance is less than $25, the minimum payment will be the balance in full. If the balance is bigger than that, the total minimum payment is the greater of $25 or 1% of the new balance + any periodic interest charge + late fees and/or any past due amounts.

It is important to be noted that the total minimum payment will be applied to cover balances with lower annual percentage rate first. This is called payment allocation and it is a privilege of the operating bank. Any amounts in excess to the minimum payment will be to cover the balances with highest annual percentage rate first. This payment allocation may result in losing the grace period benefits.

Types of penalty fees

Kohl’s imposes two types of penalty fees – late payment fee and returned payment fee.  The late payment fee is charged whenever the cardholder does not submit at least the total minimum payment before the due date every billing cycle. This fee is dependable on the account owner’s balance. A late payment fee is owed by cardholders with balance over $15 only.

FEE              BALANCE

$15              $15 – $50.01

$25              over $50

This amount is only applicable for a single violation of the cardholder agreement. However, if another late payment occurs within six months the penalty fee will increase to $35. The late payment fee will never be greater than the total minimum payment the cardholder owes.

The returned payment fee is a fee applicable when a check, an order or other instrument used to pay the balance is not honored by Kohl’s or Chase and has to be returned unprocessed. If this happens only once, the cardholder will owe a returned payment fee of $25. If a second violation of the same sort occurs within six billing periods, the penalty fee will be $10 greater.  It is important to know that the returned payment fee will not be larger in amount then the minimum payment owed by card member.
